As the climate is changing, the arctic and polar marine environments are becoming more easily operable and navigable. The evolving technology is also working to generate more appropriate vessels.

The range of applications has expanded beyond ice-operating harbour tugs to include multipurpose and dedicated icebreakers, offshore support vessels, and arctic cargo and tank ships. Also, the power transmitting capability of the geared azimuth propulsor units has increased from the initial one megawatt to an 8.4 MW system, which was applied in recent Steerprop-equipped icebreakers.
